The year 2021 marks the 200th anniversary of the 1821 Greek Revolution which led to the founding of the
modern Greek state. This lecture will examine aspects of the life and work of Count Ioannis Capodistrias
(1776-1831). Born in Corfu, educated in Italy, he took his first steps in public life as Minister of the Septinsular
Republic of the Ionian Islands and continued with a spectacular career as a diplomat in the court of
Tsar Alexander I. From his position in the Russian Foreign Ministry he greatly and benignly influenced
developments in Europe, among other in regard to the constitutional makeup of the Swiss Confederacy. Following the success of the Greek Revolution of 1821, he was called upon to serve as the first Governor of modern Greece. Against the backdrop of the ideas put forth by the French Revolution, the upheaval brought on by the Napoleonic conquests, the subsequent efforts for a lasting peace on the continent and the aspirations for freedom in a period now termed “the Age of
Revolutions”, we shall attempt to trace Capodistrias as a man whose life and actions transcended borders to make him a truly European personality.
